Yahoo! retirees

If I asked you what Google is, you would say; a search engine. If I asked you about Apple, Twitter or Facebook, I assume you know what it is. But what if I ask you what Yahoo! Is? What is it? A site with different things?

Yahoo logo

You know what ebay is, and you know what PayPal is, and after years saying they`re better together, they are splitting up. I think that is a smart thing to do, and people shouldn`t worry, because both companies have so far been a part of people`s life since they`re first day.

Elon Musk sold PayPal to eBay in 2003 and it was a great match. It became easy for people to process payments for eBay sales. This split is all about growth. You can imagine what PayPal can do in the digital wallet business if they don`t have to worry about eBay?

Right now you feel like you must have a PayPal account to shop on eBay, but you don`t. And here is the key. Later on this month, Apple will launch the new Apple Pay, and that will crash with eBay and PayPal`s mirrage. The mirrage is now over, and it`s a tricky divorce.

Now, people can pay a dozen different ways, like Apple Pay, Bitcoin or PayPal and so on. That`s fair. It`s up to the people to make a choice. It depends on where they have an account. I think many will sign up for the new Apple Pay system. They will revolutionize the digital business, and probably have a monopoly in the market, but what about Yahoo? What are they doing? What is it?

Yahoo! is not expanding. They are going in the opposite direction. They closed Yahoo Education yesterday, because, as they say, it is outside of their core experience. In addition; Users`needs are already well served by alternative online resources.

They will also shut down the Qwiki app, which automatically created short movies based on events from a user`s camera roll. They will shut down the app on November 1, but the Qwiki team will continue to innovate on a new digital media experience for Yahoo users.

Yahoo started about twenty years ago as a directory of websites that helped users explore the internet. They are still committed to connecting users with the information they`re passionate about, and their business has evolved and at the end of the year (December 31, 2014), they will retire the Yahoo Directory.

Yahoo still owns about 16% of Alibaba and Yahoo`s market cap is $40,3 billion, but the value can approach about $46 bilion. Their core business are generating only about $700 million.

The cash made by the Alibaba IPO are more worth than the company`s current market capitalization, and the company could be fairly priced with a multiplier of only 5.

The stock can move from here, and the pressure to merge with AOL has pumped the stock. I don`t think people will jump into this stock before they know more about what direction it will move. Yahoo moved up +0,57% yesterday. Price; $40,75.

SolarCity up 449,4%

I wrote about Zynga (ZNGA) yesterday, among other social media websites. The funny thing is that Zynga was the most active stock on Nasdaq yesterday. A volume leader (80,081,587), and that is twice as much as Microsoft. Wow! Zynga plummeted -12,16%.

The gaming company recently made an official statement that Zynga is now working with BitPay and will accept the currency in some of its games. This innovative approach will allow you to pay with Bitcoins.

Gamers do not need any credit card or a PIN to be signed in to their site, and transfer funds electronically. With their new mobile games for Apple`s iOS platform, they try to differentiate themselves from their competitors like International Game Technology (IGT) and Electronic Arts (EA).

That was the big loser on Nasdaq yesterday, but who was the winner? Earlier, I wrote about the health-care bull. Yesterday`s winner on Nasdaq was Sarepta Therapeutics Inc (SRPT). This winner is up 40,14%.

Number three on the Nasdaq winner list yesterday was another health-care company. Prosenca Holding (RNA). The stock is up amazingly $24.37%. Not bad for only one trading day. Analysts are bullish on both health-care stocks mentioned in here.

Another winner yesterday was SolarCity (SCTY), which is up 12,12%. So far this year this stock is up 35,2%. Last 12 months, the stock is up 449,4%. SolarCity Corp is engaged in designing, sales, engineering, installation, monitoring, maintenance and financing of solar energy systems to residential and commercial customers, and sale of electricity generated by solar energy systems to customers.

2013 was the year for solar stocks. Solar ETF`s like Guggenheim Solar (TAN) and Market Vectors Solar Energy (KWT) is up 114% and 92%. First Solar (FSLR) is downgraded. Most of all because they have a different business model than SolarCity. We have seen an intense insider selling in SolarCity last 30 days.

You can imagine how this industry will look like in the future if (or shall I say when?) the oil price is declining. The oil price will probably peak out at around $150 a barrel, but in the long run it will decline and hit the bottom at around $10 to $20 a barrel. renewable Energy is the future!

Virgin Galactic accepts Bitcoin

Sir Richard Branson is a cool guy. In 1972, he opened a chain of record stores named Virgin Records. He started his own record label and later on Virgin Megastores. Branson`s Virgin brand grew rapidly during the 1980`s and he expanded the Virgin Records music label.

Branson is the 4th richest citizen of the United Kingdom, and have 400 different companies. One of them is Virgin Galactic, and that is the space-flight branch of Sir Richard Branson`s empire.

The interesting thing about this company right now is that they is planning to use the virtual currency Bitcoin to be used for buying tickets to space. “All of our future astronauts are pioneers in their own right, and this is one more way to be forward-thinking,” Richard Branson said.

He compared innovations in flight to innovations in currency and speculated that “the days of carrying cash and coins could soon be over”.

Bitcoin has a growing support from investors including China. They belive the decentralised currency could hold long-term promise as an alternative form of payment. Virgin Galactic is the highest-profile company to endorse the currency. Bitcoin is traded on MT Gox exchange and so far this year the currency have skyrocketed!

The first bubble started in October 3rd, 2010. The BTC price was $0,06. Then the price crashed down to $0,01 and a massive selloff and buying frenzy started. The third major bitcoin bubble is occurring right now. News today: Non-Farm Employment Change & Unemployment Rate at 8:30am, Preliminary UoM Consumer Sentiment at 9:55am.

Bitcoins

If money printing policy continues, you know where the value of the dollars is going. The more printed money into the market, the lower the value. Traditionally investors and money makers buy gold to protect themselves.

Gold prices is declining, so what is the safe heaven now? Maybe a new currency? What about Bitcoins? The price has skyrocketed in 2013, and Alan Greenspan say in an intervju with Bloomberg that this is a bubble.

Bitcoin is electronic money and payment network introduced in 2009 by “Satoshi nakamoto” (pseudonymous developer). This system is called a cryptocurrency because it uses cryptografhy to secure transactions.

Specialized computers use a proof-of-work system to prevent people from copying and spending the same bitcon multiple times. This is a known problem called double-spending.

A collection of Bitcoin addresses is known as a wallet. Thefts of bitcoins from web services and online wallet services have been covered in the media, prompting assertions that the safest way to store bitcoins is in a paper wallet generated by the owner on an uncompromised computer.

Bitcoins are getting more popular as a payment for legitimate products and services. Merchants have an incentive to accept the currency because transaction fees are lower than 2 to 3% typically imposed by credit processors. WordPress use bitcons. So does OkCupid, Reddit and the Chinese Internet giant Baidu.

Some people in Argentina use Bitcoins as an alternative to the official currency, which is stymied by inflation and strict capital controls. Some financial journalists have suggested that there was a link between higher Bitcoin usage in Spain and the 2012 – 2013 Cypriot financial crisis.

Professor John Quiggin of the University of Queensland has noted that since Bitcoin by design has no intrinsic value, it is perhaps the finest example of a pure bubble! but cautions that we have no way to predict when the value of bitcoins will return to zero.

Bitcoins association with criminal activities has historically hindered the currency from attaining widespread, mainstream use and has attracted the attention of financial regulators, legislative bodies, and law enforcement. Washington Post called it “the currency of choice for seedy online activities”. CNN called Bitcoin a “shady online currency”. You are hereby warned!
