Tesla vs Fisker

Fisker Automotive Inc is an American automaker based in Anaheim, California. They released their first product which is Fisker Karma. That`s one of the world`s first production plug-in hybrid electic vehicles.

It debuted in 2008, but production was suspended in November 2012 due to financial difficulties, with about 2,450 Karmas built since 2011. Fisker stopped production in the summer 2012, and was seeking new investment.

Matter were further complicated by the bankruptcy of its battery supplier A123 Systems. The production stopped for over five months and co-founder and CEO Henrik Fisker resigned. One of the investors in Fisher was Leonardo de Caprio, and he lost everything.

Fisker eventually declared bankruptcy in November 2013, and in February 2014 the company was bought by Chinese auto-parts conglomerate Wanxiang Group. Price; US$24,75 million, supported by the Official Creditors committee in the case.

Wanxiang Group owns A 123 Systems (now known as B456). Fisker`s former battery supplier, and Fisker argues that Wanxiang`s conduct was partly responsible for Fisker`s business failure. As part of its bid, Wanziang proposes to restart production of the Karma.

Wanxiang received court approval on February 18 this year, to buy the assets of Fisker after a three-day auction against Hybrid with a bid of US$149,2 million, with bidding starting at US$55 million, significantly larger than the previous US$24,75 million bid.

Wanxiang claimed that it could restart production, estimating that it would sell more than 1,000 Fisker Karma cars in the first 18 months in the US and 500 in Europe. Fisker Karma is a plug-in hybrid luxury sports sedan produced by Fisker Automotive and manufactured at Valmet Automotive in Finland.

The aluminium frame was engineered by Fisker and was supplied by Norsk Hydro from Norway. The 20,1 kWh (72,36 MJ) lithium-ion rechargeable battery in each car came from A123 Systems in Watertown, Massachusetts.

By the end of 2012 Fisker claimed 1,800 cars had been delivered. They have established 45 dealerships in the US and three in Canada. They have built 2,000 vehicles and has partnered with five importers: GP Supercars (Merano, Italy), Nellemann (Copenhagen, Denmark), the Emil Frey Group (Zurich, Switzerland), BD Otomotive (Istandbul, Turkey) and Al-Futtaim Group (Middle East and North Africa).

In April 14, 2008, Tesla Motors filed a lawsuit against Fisker Automotive, alleging they stole Tesla`s tehnology and are using it to develop their own hybrid car, the Fisker Karma. Tesla`s suit claims that the design work done for the Model S by Fisker Coachbuild was substandard, and that Fisker diverted its best ideas to the Karma.

In early 2009 the suit was settled in Fisker`s favor and Tesla was ordered to pay Fisker more than US$1.1 million in legal fees. Fisker looks very similar to the Tesla cars, and if Fisker start to produce electric cars now, it will take many year to be finish and launch the new car.

So far, Tesla is absolutely the best car I have driven. It`s also one of the coolest. Tesla must expect to see competitors on the market but so far Tesla is the leader, and it will take some time for others to produce the cars and start to sell them.

Car war

Tesla (TSLA) produced 7,535 Model S units in Q1 (6,587 in Q4). Guidance was 7,400. The company delivered 6,457 units, slightly above guidance of 6,400. Tesla expects to produce 8,5K – 9K Model S units in Q2, and they expect to deliver 7,500 units.

The company expects to be «marginally profitable» in Q2. The EPS consensus is at $0,27. Full-year free cash flow is expected to be slightly negative. Operating cash flow was $61M, and capex totaled $141M. The full-year capes forecast is $650M – $850M.

Gross margin was 25,4%. The stock will open down about – 8,5% today. It declined -2,86% yesterday. The stock price is $201,35, and the question is: Are Tesla stocks overvalued? They are doing it well but are Tesla`s market cap reasonable given the results and outlook?

Despite the success many companies have, its stock can be massively overvalued, and some investors can have unrealistic expectations going into earnings. They did probably not sell enough cars to satisfy the investors, and they need to sell plenty for the rest of the year to justify current price.

So far, they are still in a growth phase, putting cash back into the company to grow. The cost of batteries when they need to be replaced somewhere between 200,000 and 400,000 miles will be significantly cheaper in the future.

I think that Tesla is a good brand, but they are not alone on the market, and many other companies will follow. Take a look at BMW i8, which is a plug-in hybrid. The 2015 model has a 7,1 kWh lithium-ion battery pack that delivers an all-electric range of 37 km (23 mi).

BMW Vision Efficient Dynamics concept car is a plug-in hybrid with a three cylinder turbo diesel engine. The initial turbo diesel concept car was unveiled at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show, and deliveries in Europe are scheduled to begin in next month, and about a month later in the U.S.

The problem with Tesla is the limited time on the battery. With BMW i8 you have both, battery and gas, but the battery is in my opinion too small and limited. Anyway; this is just the beginning of a new era in the car industry.

Mercedes B-klass Electric Drive will be launched in the U.S soon. The engine is from Tesla, and they will fight against VW e-Golf, Nissan Leaf and BMW i3. The price for the Electric Drive will be $41,450.

Daimler are stock owner in Tesla and they are the factory that have developed the engine in the new car. The engine is fast and seems to be a great unit. It is a Tesla engine. Very good for Tesla and CEO Elon Musk, but are the Tesla stock price right?

CEO Elon Musk admitted several months ago that the stock price is more than they have any right to deserve. Tesla is overvalued using any reasonable valuation metric. Market cap is $27,000,000,000. This valuation will probably be repriced much lower, and that`s probably why it will plunge today.

Tesla have to increase its intrinsic value the next years. If not I think the stock price will decline to a lower level to reflect the company`s right valuation. A bearish commentary from Elon Musk is something long investors should take notice of.

Stocks rebound

We are in a positive territory again. Stocks up and commodities down. Gold is down -0,81% to 1,339,30. Copper is down -0,41 to 317,45. Crude Oil (Brent) is down -1,27% to 109,79. But Silver is up +0,17 to 21,27.

What Putin and Russia did was expensive to Russia. The Russian stock exchange (MICEX) plummeted after Putin declared the right to invade Ukraine. MICEX fell $58,4 bln from friday to monday, but are trading up again today.

The cost of the Winter Olympic games was $51 billion, held in the southern city of Sochi. In other words; the decision to invade Ukraine was more expensive for Russia than the whole Winter Olympic games.

Now, Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered troops to turn back to the base and stop all military exercises. That is music in the investors ears, wich is now less nervous and the stock market is turning up again.

CAC 40 is up +1,34%. FTSE 100 is up 1,08%. DAX is up 1,03% and FTSE MIB is up +1,71%. Warren Buffet say war is a buying opportunity, because money in it self will lose value. Other investors say commodities like gold is a safe-heaven bet.

Tesla (TSLA) don`t care about wars. Trading up +2,13% yesterday and seems to continue up today. Tesla is up +619,3% (1 YR). So far in 2014, Tesla is up 70,1%. What a great company. It seems like the new safe-heaven is Tesla!

It seems like Tesla (TSLA) is on the way to change one of America`s most beloved industries – Automotive. This is not only good for Tesla themselves, but SolarCity (SCTY) will profit from it too. You probably know Tesla`s Superchargers.

tesla

Not everyone knows that Tesla`s superchargers is powered by a combination of electric grid, solar, and batteries. The batteries are being used to store excess solar energy and offset the costs of buying energy from the grid.

SolarCity is working on a new project called DemandLogic battery storage systems. They have tested the battery systems (provided by Tesla) in some people`s homes to complement their solar panels.

The intention is to bypass peak rate charges and store or sell any excess energy, ultimately providing a lower energy bill. Just like the superchargers. You can just imagine how it will be in the future as the technology matures.

solarcity-lg

A joint venture by Elon Musk and SolarCity could be a great company to make a better world! SolarCity is up 51,6% in 2014, while Tesla is up 67,9% in 2014. Tesla is up 625,1% (1 YR). SolarCity is up 375,6% (! YR). Great!

Tesla +422,1% (1YR)

Coca Cola`s (KO) Global volume rose 1% during Q4, they told us in their reports yesterday. They have a solid growth for its Powerade brand in North America. Beverages are still doing it well. Coca Cola is still a dominant consumer beverage company, trades at a forward PE of 15,4 and offers a dividend yield of close to 3%.

Market cap of $167B with revenues of $48B and a gross margin in excess of 60%. Net income of $9B. They have a massive distribution network and are able to distribute products globally to any corner of the world.

Zynga (ZNGA) was trading at $14,39 in March 2, 2012. It jumped +5,75% yesterday, now trading at $5,15. Zynga said they will cut their workforce by 15%. On top of that, they are buying NaturalMotion for $527 million. Is this the year Zynga makes a comeback?

Remember in 2012 when the company bought OMGPOP. The rival game maker slowly died and Zynga shut it down only one year after buying it. Will the latest purchase of NaturalMotion share the same fate?

There ain`t no doubt that 2013 was the year for Tesla (TSLA) and Elon Musk. They had a massive stock growth, media coverage, and everybody was talking about the «new» car. Elon Musk is often compared to Steve Jobs due to his innovation.

The Model S is an incredible success with their technology, safety, luxury and EV. When you look at the stock price for Tesla compared to the company’s true value, I belive 2014 will be something different from 2013.

Don`t get me wrong. I like the car and I am bullish in the long run, but sometimes in the long term bullish trend channel, we will see some corrections. The price of the stock has outpaced the progress that the company has made.
