The European Commission attacks – again!

Europe are attacking big U.S companies and want more money from them. Last year Europe attacked Google. Now they are attacking Apple. Based on a two-year long investigation, the European Commission has ordered Apple to pay about $14 billion in back taxes for its subsidiaries in Ireland.

$14 billion? Wow!

Last year, the European Commission EU said that Google was too dominant in three related markets. They also said that Google is using that position to distort competition and the EU claims that Google limits access to key aspects of the Android ecosystem by insisting that phone markers install Google search and Chrome apps.

Not only that. The EU also said that Google block phone makers from producing phones that run alternative versions of Android and that EU also believes that Google has illegally paid makers and other mobile phone companies to preinstall Google search exclusively.

This is not the first time EU has attacked big U.S companies.

In 2001, the European Commission sent a sternly worded missive to Microsoft. EU accused the software maker of having illegally extended its dominance in operating systems for personal computers (PC`s) into adjacent markets, for tying Windows to programs that play music and videos.

The European Commission said Microsoft was too dominant in the market in 2001. Last year they claimed Google was too dominant in the internet search market. Google are now ruling the smart phone market with their Android system.

Now, they are attacking Apple. Not because they are too big, but because they are having a good agreement with Ireland that allows Apple to pay less tax than other businesses. The European Commission has concluded that Ireland must recover the illegal aid.

Commissioner Margrethe Vestager, in charge of competition policy, said: «Member States cannot give tax benefits to selected companies – this is illegal under EU state aid rules. The Commission`s investigation concluded that Ireland granted illegal tax benefits to Apple, which enabled it to pay substantially less tax than other businesses over many years. In fact, this selective treatment allowed Apple to pay an effective corporate tax rate of 1% on its European profits in 2003 down to 0,005% in 2014.

Apple`s provisions for income taxes outside of the United States amounted to «just» about $5 billion in that period. You can imagine what the amount is if Apple paid an effective tax rate ranging from 1% in 2003 to 0,005% in 2014 on its European profits at that time?

For instance, Apple paid an effective tax rate of 26,1% in the U.S in 2014, with income taxes adding up to almost $60 billion in the period between 2003 and 2014.

But Apple has their own tax structure in Europe, which is Apple Sales International and Apple Operations Europe. Both are two Irish incorporated companies that are fully owned by the Apple group.

Apple Sales International and Apple Operations Europe make yearly payments to Apple in the US to fund research and development efforts conducted on behalf of the Irish companies in the US. These payments amounted to about $2 billion in 2011 and significantly increased in 2014.

The European Commission claims that only a fraction of the profits of Apple Sales International were allocated to its Irish branch and subject to tax in Ireland. The remaining vast majority of profits were allocated to the «head office», where they remained untaxed.

If you are too dominant, they will attack you. If you are too big, they will attack you. If you are too popular, they will attack you. If you don`t pay much tax, they will also attack you. The EU system will find something anyway.

Apple and Ireland both said they disagreed with the record penalty and would appeal against it. What is the end of this story if we face a government that don`t want the money? And is it a problem for a company that made a net profit of $53bn in the 2015 financial year?

What is the next US company to be attacked by Europe?

“Brexit” could trigger World War III, Prime Minister David Cameron said

Europe can be on a brink of a new war. Again! Wow, it`s been a long time since the last big war in Europe. Is time for a new one? We have many «triggers» out there, and it seems like everything blows up to a perfect storm.

Prime Minister David Cameron said that peace in Europe can be threatened if people in Britain votes to leave the European Union. David Cameron arguing that EU is a peace project and UK has regretted «turning its back» on Europe in the past.

David Cameron wants to stay in the European Union and many people agree with him. But not all of them. Boris Johnson are on the opposite side. He sparked criticism when he suggested the conflict in Ukraine was an example of «EU foreign policy-making on the hoof».

Former Swedish prime minister Carl Bildt branded him an !apologist for Putin». Boris Johnson said the comments were «absolutely contemptible» and called for and apology. He repeatedly condemned Russia`s actions in Ukraine.

Earlier this week, NATO members warned about a «Brexit». In an open letter to Daily Telegraph, they said it would be «very troubling» if the UK jumps out ot the European Union membership. Camerons warning was bolstered by five former secretary generals of the Wests military alliance Nato. Lord Peter Carrington, Javier Solana, Lord George Robertson, Jaap De Hoop Scheffer and Anders Fogh Rasmussen bolstered Cameron`s warning.

David Cameron said in a speech earlier this week that Britain must stay in the EU to help prevent the Continent being ripped apart by another conflict. He also said that «Brexit» could trigger World War III, also claiming that the government doesn`t have any plans for a «Brexit».

Wow, who wants to go for a «Brexit» on the June 23 referendum?

Mr. Cameron also said: «Can we be so sure peace and stability on our continent are assured beyond any shadow of doubt? Is that a risk worth taking? «I never be so rash to make that assumption.»

A few hours later, Mr Cameron was attacked by Boris Johnson, who said: «People should think very hard before they make these kinds of warnings».

Just look at the history, and what Cameron referred to in Britains role in «pivotal moments in European history: Blenheim, Trafalgar, Waterloo, our countrys heroism in the Great War and, most of all, our long stand in 1940.

Cameron also said: «What happens in our neighbourhood matter to Britain. That was true in 1914, 1940, 1989…and it is true in 2016.»

Mr Cameron also recalled how Winston Churchill «argued passionately for Western Europe to come together, to promote free trade and build institutions which would endure so our continent would never again see such bloodshed».

A YouGov poll for Good Morning Britain found 42% of voters back In and 40% Out.

40% less nitrogen dioxide in Paris

Pollution is a huge problem. The problem is not only in China, but in Paris too. Earlier this year, Paris was the world`s most polluted city! The noxious smog was so dense it almost obscured the French capital`s totemic landmark, the Eiffel Tower.

Not only that. Climate change is a global serious problem. According to a report from French Senate, the upper house of parliament, air pollution cost France €101,3bn a year in negative health, economic and financial consequences.

In the same report, it said illnesses created or worsened by pollution included Alzheimer`s disease, heart disease, respiratory disease and some cancers. It also stated that polluted air is also linked to foetal development problems.

The report estimated that the pollution caused up to 45,000 premature deaths in France a year, from asthma, chronic bronchitis, heart attacks, lung cancer and strokes. The Senate criticised successive governments for a «failure to mobilise» to clean up the city`s air.

Now you know how serious Volkswagen`s manipulation of emissions data for diesel vehicles was?

The French claimed this was typical «German economic arrogance».

Last year, I wrote about the International climate meeting in France (November 2014), and ahead of that meeting, City mayor Anne Hidalgo is doing everything she can to clean up the air. On Twitter she said that she wants to eliminate diesel use in Paris. She also said that her goal is to eradicate this harmful fuel in Paris.

According to Airparif, the levels of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) in Paris have peaked at «very high». In the last 12 months, the average of the level of NO2 was 66µg/m3, which is above EU limit of 40µg/m3. The quai has now and then topped 100µg/m3,

Airparif also said pollution levels were up to double those allowed by the regulations. Five pollutants posed problems in the capital: benzene, nitrogen dioxide, ozone and the fine particles PM10 and PM2,5.

City mayor Anne Hidalgo has a plan. Last week (September 27) she arranged the city`s first «day without cars», and that arrangement led to a dramatic drop in both air and noise pollution.

Some parts of Paris registered about 40% less nitrogen dioxide in the air on September 27!

The noise was recorded by half in the same areas. Wow!

It is nitrogen dioxide that is producing smog. Can you imagine how it was on Champs-Èlysèes that day? The bustling Avenue des Champs-Èlysèes lowered the nitrogen dioxide levels by 30% that sunday. In other words; The last day of Tour de France is a great day! (I`m a bicycle enthusiast).

In a few weeks, many of the important world leaders will come together in Paris for what has been billed as the world`s biggest ever climate change conference. COP21 will seek an International agreement on dramatic measures to keep global warming below 2C. This is the war world leaders should spend time on.

I`m glad we have some leaders we can TRUST!
