The assassination of Julius Caesar and “the ides of March”

Today, On March 15, 44 BC, the founder of the Roman Republic and the rise of Roman Empire, Julius Caesar was assassinated and killed by members of the Roman Senate. The world`s most famous political murders.

Caesars second heir were among the assassins. There were totally as many as sixty assassins. Caesar was stabbed twenty-three times and died at the base of Pompeys statue, but the assassins made a big mistake.

They didnt know what to do after Caesars death.

Caesar

They didnt have a plan, so they mistakenly allowed Marcus Antonius (Mark Antonio), who was Caesars cousin and right-hand man, to live. Caesar`s death is a key moment in history. It all resulted in a cycle of civil wars, which resulted in one of the most significant constitutional transformations in history.

They went from a republican system of government and became an empire. Supporters of the Republic point to how it threw off the tyrannical king Tarquin the Proud and introduced elements of democracy.

It became popular also in Italy, France, Spain, Greece, Macedonia, Syria, Libya, Egypt, Turkey and Tunisia.

Julius Caesar was born 12 July 100 BCE. His father was a Praetor who governed the province of Asia and his mother was of noble birth. Both held to the popular ideology of Rome which favored democratization of government and more rights for the lower class as opposed to the optimates factions` claim of the superiority of the nobility and tradition Roman values which favored the upper classes.

It should be understood that the Optimate and the Populare were not political parties in conflict with each other but, rather, political ideologies which many people shifted toward and from, regardless of class in society.

The concept of appealing to the people for support, rather than seeking approval from the Roman Senate or the other Patricians, would work well for Caesar later in life.

Gaius Julius Caesar was Roman statesman, general, and notable author of Latin Prose. Caesar was extremely talented in many ways which is very unusual. He was a military colossus, compelling writer, original thinker, magnetic orator, dynamic reformer and magnanimous politician.

He was also narcissistic, manipulative, egotistical, sexual predatory, shockingly savage in war even by Roman standards, and monomaniacal obsessed with acquiring absolute power for himself. Caesar is considered by many historians to be one of the greatest military commanders in history.

Thanks to William Shakespeare, «Beware the ides of March» means that people always remember March 15.

In 60 BC, Caesar, Crassus and Pompey formed a political alliance that dominated Roman politics for several years. Their attempts to amass power through populist tactics were opposed by the conservative ruling class within the Roman Senate.

Caesars victories in the Gallic Wars, completed by 51 BC, extended Romes territory to the English Channel and Rhine. Caesar became the first Roman general to cross both when he built a bridge across the Rhine and conducted the first invasion of Britain.

These achievement granted him unmatched military power and threatened to eclipse the standing of Pompey, who had realigned himself with the Senate after the death of Crassus in 53 BC. With the Gallic Wars concluded, the Senate ordered Caesar to step down from his military command and return to Rome.

Caesar refuse the order, and instead marked his defiance in 49 BC by crossing the Rubicon with a legion, leaving his province and illegally entering Roman Italy under arms. Civil war resulted, and Caesar`s victory in the war put him in an unrivaled position of power and influence.

After assuming control of government, Caesar began a programme of social and governmental reforms, including the creation of the Julian Calendar. He centralised the bureaucracy of the Republic and was eventually proclaimed «dictator in perpetuity», giving him additional authority.

But underlying political conflicts had not been resolved, and on the Ides of March (15 March) 44 BC, Caesar was assassinated by a group of rebellious senators.

A new civil war broke out, and the constitutional government of the Republic was never fully restored. Caesar`s adoped heir Octavian, later known as Augustus, rose to sole power after defeating his opponents in the civil war. Octavian set about solidifying his power, and the era of the Roman Empire began.

Rome finally became an empire at the end of the 1st century BC, under Augustus and his authoritarian successors. The Roman Empire had its centre in the Mediterranean, controlling all the countries on its shores; the northern border was marked by the Rhine and Danube rivers.

The Empire reached its maximum expansion, controlling approximately 5,900,000 km2 of land surface, including Britain, Romania and parts of Mesopotamia, Pax Romana, a period of peace, civilisation and an efficient centralised government in the subject territories ended in the 3rd century, when a series of civil wars undermined Rome`s economic and social strength.

The Roman Empire had been repeatedly attacked by invading armies from Northern Europe and in 476, Rome finally fell.

British historian Edward Gibbon argued in «The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire» (1776) that the Romans had become decadent, they had lost civic virtue.

Glen W. Bowersock has remarked, «we have been obsessed with the fall: it has been valued as an archetype for every perceived decline, and, hence, as a symbol for our own fears.» It remains one of the greatest historical questions, and has a tradition rich in scholarly interest.

Over time many theories have been proposed on why the Empire fell, or whether indeed it fell at all.

I love The United States, but what I love is the Republic. Not the Empire. Some empires are planned, some are not, and empires created on purpose, such as Napoleonic France and Nazi Germany, have rarely lasted.

After World War II (1945), The United States became an empire. All Empire`s are a part of an evolution.

What`s the next step?

Sweden has its own JFK case

John Fitzgerald Kennedy (JFK) was the 35th President of the United States. He was the first Roman Catholic president. On May 29, next year, he would have celebrated his 100 year birthday but someone on this planet wanted it different. JFK was assassinated in Dallas, Texas  on November 22, 1963.

Lee Harvey Oswald was arrested the same day and determined to have fired shots that hit the President from a sixth floor window of the Texas School Book Depository. Dallas nightclub owner Jack Ruby mortally wounded Oswald two days later in a jail corridor.

The FBI and the Warren Commission officially concluded that Oswald was the lone assassin, but its report was sharply criticized.

JFK is not the first president to be assassinated. William McKinley was the 25th President of the United States, and served from 1897, until his assassination in September 1901, six months into his second term.

McKinley led the nation to victory in the Spanish-American War, raised protective tariffs to promote American industry, and maintained the nation on the gold standard in a rejection of inflationary proposals.

Sweden has its own JFK case. Prime Minister of Sweden Olof Palme (59) was assassinated in 1986. That`s exactly 30 years ago on Sunday 28, 2016.

Palme was shot twice in the stomach by a lone gunman after exiting a cinema with his wife Lisbeth Palme, whom the assassin shot and missed before fleeing the scene on foot.  The eyewitnesses called the ambulance and the police, but Palme died on the way to the hospital.

The ambulance could only confirm his death, while the police did a remarkably sloppy job, failing to secure and investigate the crime scene for hours. Furthermore, no real attempts to catch the perpetrator were made immediately after the murder.

Christer Pettersson admitted killing Palme in 1988, and he was also identified by Palmes wife. Later on, Pettersson took his confession back, saying he was coerced to do so by the police, and Mrs Palmes evidence was considered insufficient, and Pettersson went free.

Pettersson died in September 2004. He was reported to have confessed to the killing before his death, but the investigation into Olof Palme`s death remains open.

sweden-983436_960_720

Conspiracy theories considered the drug addicted and social outcast Christer Pettersson (42) to be a red herring, set up to finally close the case, but his rehabilitation prevented this from happening. He died by supposedly falling from the stairs and suffering a cerebral hemorrhage. The theorists expressed doubts in the accident nature of his injury.

Olof Palme was at the time of his death been accused of being pro-Soviet and not safeguarding Sweden`s interests. Arrangements had been made for a trip to Moscow to discuss Soviet submarine incursions into Swedish waters.

Palme was a social democrat and believed in an open government and shunned tight security. He normally had two bodyguards to protect him on official functions, but not at the cinema in Stockholm, Sweden.

Just like John Lennon and Bob Marley, Mr Palme was against the war in Vietnam, and he became a leading advocate of peace and non violence and campaigned for an end to the war in Vietnam. He will also be remembered as a campaigner for the working classes and Third World causes.

Bob Marley was a political peace activist and wrote the song  ”Get up, stand up.” John Lennon`s name will always be synonymous with peace and political activism, and the song ”Give peace a chance” is a 1969 single.

Lennon’s criticism of the Vietnam War resulted in a lengthy attempt by Richard Nixon`s administration to deport him.

john-lennon-487033_960_720

Bob Marley died at the age of 36, while John Lennon died in 1980 at the age of 40. Mark David Chapman shot Lennon in the back four times in Dakota, New York.

Ono issued a statement the next day, saying ”There is no funeral for John”, ending it with the words, ”John loved and prayed for the human race. Please pray the same for him.”

Olof Palme once said; ”I know that the Thatchers and the Reagans will be out in a few years. We have to survive till then.” Mr Palme was Anti-American, and saw himself carrying the banner of Social Democracy through Europe at a time when the Right was only temporarily in triumph.

That`s 30 years ago. Now we have the European Union and ISIS. Refugee and financial crisis. War in Syria, Iraq and Libya.

In terms of psychological impact, Palmes assassination had the same effects on Sweden as Kennedys assassination had on the U.S.

Palme and Kennedy`s death remains open.

Is Chrislam the new religion?

There has always been a huge conflict between different religions and some people claim that there is a group of people on this planet that set all the religions up against each other. But Pope Francis belive that all religions are different paths to the same God, and he is working hard to lay a foundation for the coming One world religion.

Is Chrislam the new religion?

During the Popes visit to <strong>St. Patricks Cathedral in Manhattan, he embraced Chrislam and talked about a One World Religion. He also said that Christians and Muslims worship the same God. Watch Pope Francis’ prayer intentions in the video below.

Some people belive in God, some in Allah. Others belive in Jesus Christ or Buddha, but Pope Francis’ message is that we all, regardless of religious profession, are children of God. Some people may be shocked or think that this video is a joke, but it isnt. Its real, but not a new idea.

John Paul II significantly improved the Catholic Church`s relations with Judaism, Islam, the Eastern Orthodox Church, and the Anglican Communion. His wish was “to place his Church at the heart of a new religious alliance that would bring together Jews, Muslims and Christians in a great religious armada”.

The Catholic Church is aware of the importance of promoting friendship and respect between men and women of different religious traditions and the Pope also attests the valuable work that the Pontifical Council does for interreligious dialogue performs.

If different religions is difficult, maybe a one world religion is a peace project?

Gods of Egypt and The battle for mankind

Look forward to more fantasy films coming up in 2016. Like many other fantasy films, it is a battle for mankind. A battle between the darkness and the light.

The Egyptian god of darkness Set takes over the throne of the Egyptian empire. Set has an army behind him; gods, beasts and demons. A mortal hero (Bek), allies with the Egyptian god Horus in a mission to save the world and to rescue his love.

Gods of Egypt is an upcoming American fantasy film featuring ancient Egyptian deities. The film is directed by Alex Proyas and Scottish Gerard Butler plays the god of darkness Set who takes over the Egyptian empire.

Brenton Thwaites plays the mortal hero Bek who partners with the god Horus, played by Coster-Waldau, to save the world and to rescue his love.

After filming started in March 2014, there has been some critics about the casting practice of white actors as Egyptian characters as “Hollywood whitewashing”.

Chadwich Beseman, who plays the god Thoth, commented on the whitewashing, said he expected the backlash to happen when he saw the script. He said: “I’m thankful that I did, because actually, I agree with it. That`s why I wanted to do it, so you would see someone of African descent playing Thoth, the father of mathematics, astronomy, the god of wisdom.”

Lionsgate plans to release Gods of Egypt in theaters in the United States on February 26, 2016.
